It grows to around 15cm and, while generally peaceful with fish it cannot swallow, it is an opportunistic predator with real presence. A rewarding fish that supports one of our own threatened natives.

Natural Habitat

Mogurnda adspersa is native to eastern Australia, historically widespread through the Murray–Darling system and coastal drainages of Queensland and New South Wales. It lives among rocks, timber and vegetation in slow-flowing rivers, billabongs and wetlands, and is now threatened across much of its southern range.

Appearance

A stocky, blunt-headed gudgeon coloured olive to bronze and covered in rows of red and purple-blue spots, with attractive banding through the fins. Colours intensify dramatically when males display or defend a territory. Adults reach roughly 12–15cm.

Temperament and Compatibility

Best described as semi-aggressive: peaceful enough with robust tankmates of similar size but quite capable of eating small fish and shrimp. Males can be territorial with each other, so provide caves and cover. A superb choice for a native community of similarly sized fish.

Feeding

A micro-carnivore that relishes live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia and small earthworms. Most will also learn to take quality sinking pellets. Do not rely on flake alone.

Care Requirements

An adaptable, hardy fish that tolerates a wide temperature range, from cool temperate to subtropical. Provide a medium tank with hiding places among rocks and wood, gentle to moderate flow and stable water. Undemanding and well suited to unheated indoor tanks in much of Australia.

Breeding

Readily bred in the aquarium. The pair clean a flat surface and the female lays a patch of adhesive eggs, which the male then guards and fans until they hatch after several days. A rewarding native to spawn.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Mogurnda adspersa

Common Name

Southern Purple Spotted Gudgeon

Origin

Eastern Australia (Murray–Darling and coastal drainages)

Maximum Size

Around 15cm

Lifespan

4–8 years

Temperament

Semi-aggressive

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

75 litres

Recommended Tank Size

120 litres or larger

Diet

Carnivore (micro-predator)

Water Temperature

18–26°C

pH Range

7.0–8.0

GH Range

8–20 dGH (neutral to hard)

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Beginners, Australian native tanks

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes — will not eat healthy plants

Suitable Tank Mates

Other robust Australian natives of similar size, such as rainbowfish, larger hardyheads, Murray River rainbows and similarly sized gudgeons.
