A hardy, characterful bottom-cruiser that grows to around 15cm, it is best kept as the only shark-type fish in a tank with bold, similar-sized companions. Striking and active, but candidly territorial — this is not a peaceful community fish.

Natural Habitat

Epalzeorhynchos frenatum comes from the river basins of mainland Southeast Asia — the Mekong, Chao Phraya and neighbouring systems of Thailand, Laos and Cambodia — where it lives over sandy and rocky riverbeds, grazing biofilm and foraging among structure.

Appearance

A sleek, torpedo-shaped fish with a dark grey to black body and vivid red-orange fins, including an upright, shark-like dorsal that gives the group its name. An albino form with a pale body and red fins is also common. Adults reach about 15cm.

Temperament and Compatibility

Semi-aggressive and strongly territorial, especially towards other bottom-dwellers and any look-alike species. It is best kept singly, as it will relentlessly chase its own kind and other sharks unless the tank is very large and heavily structured. Fast, mid-to-upper water tankmates that keep out of its zone work best.

Feeding

An omnivore that grazes algae and biofilm and scavenges for the rest. Feed a varied diet of sinking pellets, algae wafers, quality flake, and occasional frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp.

Care Requirements

Provide a spacious tank with a tight-fitting lid — it is an accomplished jumper — plus caves, rocks and driftwood to break up sightlines and give it a territory. It is hardy across a range of conditions but does best with clean, stable, well-filtered water and some current.

Breeding

Rarely bred in home aquaria. Commercial stock is produced on farms with hormonal assistance, and the species' territorial nature makes pairing difficult in a normal tank. Home breeding should be considered impractical.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Epalzeorhynchos frenatum

Common Name

Rainbow Shark, Red-finned Shark

Origin

Southeast Asia (Mekong and Chao Phraya basins)

Maximum Size

Around 15cm

Lifespan

5–8 years

Temperament

Semi-aggressive (territorial)

Difficulty

Beginner–Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

150 litres

Recommended Tank Size

200 litres or larger

Diet

Omnivore

Water Temperature

24–27°C

pH Range

6.5–7.5

GH Range

5–15 dGH (soft to moderately hard)

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Keepers wanting a bold, single centrepiece bottom fish

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes — grazes algae but does not eat healthy plants

Suitable Tank Mates

Robust, active mid-to-upper water fish such as larger barbs, danios, rainbowfish, gouramis and medium tetras.
