It grazes constantly over rock and sand and stays under 7 cm, but be honest with yourself before buying: wild specimens are notoriously difficult feeders and need a mature, food-rich aquarium.

Natural Habitat

Koumansetta rainfordi is found across the western Pacific, including the Great Barrier Reef, on sheltered coastal and lagoon reefs with fine sand and abundant algae film. It picks at algae, detritus and tiny invertebrates all day long. In the aquarium it needs a mature system with plenty of live rock, a fine sand bed and a healthy population of copepods.

Appearance

A slim, elegant goby with a pale body carrying several bright orange-and-blue horizontal stripes and a distinctive false eyespot on the rear dorsal fin. It is a small, low-slung fish that hovers and hops just above the substrate.

Temperament and Compatibility

Extremely peaceful and rather timid. It is easily outcompeted or intimidated, so house it only with other gentle species. Two can be kept together in a larger, established tank, but avoid boisterous or fast-feeding tankmates that will beat it to food.

Feeding

This is the crux of keeping this fish. It grazes on algae, detritus and micro-fauna and often ignores standard fare at first. Provide a mature refugium or live rock rich in copepods, and tempt it onto frozen enriched brine, mysis, calanus and algae-based preparations with frequent small feeds. A brand-new tank will slowly starve it. Captive-bred individuals are far easier and strongly preferred.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of 75 L, with 100 L or larger recommended, and only in a tank at least six months mature with a productive sand bed. Maintain temperature at 24–27°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity 1.023–1.025. Gentle flow, a tight lid and stable water suit it well.

Breeding

Breeding is uncommon in home aquariums. It lays demersal eggs among the substrate, but raising the tiny planktonic larvae requires specialised live-food culture. Captive breeding is done commercially rather than at home.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Koumansetta rainfordi (formerly Amblygobius rainfordi)

Common Name

Rainford Goby (Court Jester Goby)

Origin

Western Pacific, including the Great Barrier Reef

Maximum Size

6.5 cm

Lifespan

3–5 years

Temperament

Peaceful

Difficulty

Advanced (difficult feeder)

Minimum Tank Size

75 L

Recommended Tank Size

100 L or larger, mature

Diet

Grazing omnivore; algae, detritus and micro-fauna, plus frozen enriched brine, mysis and calanus

Water Temperature

24–27°C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.023–1.025

Suitable For

Mature, peaceful reef aquariums with a productive sand bed and pod population

Reef Safe

Reef safe; will not harm corals or clams

Plant Safe

Not applicable for marine fish

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other small gobies, firefish, cardinalfish, fairy wrasses, clownfish and peaceful reef species that will not bully it or race it to food.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with aggressive or territorial fish, fast greedy feeders, and larger predators.
