Active, peaceful and reef safe, it is one of the more manageable fairy wrasses at around 8 cm and is perfect for a calm reef.

Natural Habitat

Cirrhilabrus rubripinnis comes from the western Pacific, particularly around the Philippines, living in loose groups over rubble slopes and feeding on zooplankton drifting over the reef. In the aquarium it appreciates open swimming space, live rock for shelter and a securely fitted lid.

Appearance

Males are a rich purple-red to magenta with brilliant red dorsal, anal and tail fins and a paler underside, colours that flare during display. Females and sub-adults are a simpler reddish-orange. It is a slim, small fairy wrasse well suited to medium reef tanks.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful and reef safe. Males may squabble with other fairy wrasses, so keep only one male per tank unless the aquarium is large. It mixes well with other calm reef species and is a good choice where a smaller wrasse is wanted.

Feeding

A carnivore and planktivore. Offer a varied diet of mysis, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood and good-quality marine pellets and flake, fed two or three times daily. Frequent small feeds keep its colour and condition at their best.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of 250 L, with 340 L or larger recommended. Maintain temperature at 24–27°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity 1.023–1.025. Stable water, moderate flow and plenty of rockwork suit it well. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as fairy wrasses are accomplished jumpers.

Breeding

Breeding is not practical in home aquariums. Like other fairy wrasses it is a pelagic spawner with tiny planktonic larvae that require specialised rearing. Focus instead on excellent nutrition and stable conditions.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Cirrhilabrus rubripinnis

Common Name

Red Fin Fairy Wrasse

Origin

Western Pacific (Philippines)

Maximum Size

8 cm

Lifespan

5–8 years

Temperament

Peaceful

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

250 L

Recommended Tank Size

340 L or larger

Diet

Carnivore; mysis, enriched brine shrimp, chopped seafood and marine pellets

Water Temperature

24–27°C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.023–1.025

Suitable For

Peaceful reef aquariums with a secure lid

Reef Safe

Reef safe; will not harm corals or clams

Plant Safe

Not applicable for marine fish

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other fairy and flasher wrasses (added together), anthias, cardinalfish, clownfish, gobies, tangs and other peaceful reef species.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with aggressive dottybacks, large angelfish, triggers, groupers or other bullies, and avoid adding a second fairy wrasse male to a smaller tank.
