A peaceful, shoaling, open-water cichlid, it fills the middle of the tank with movement and colour, with males reaching around 15–20cm. Hardy and relatively gentle for a cichlid, it's a favourite centrepiece for the Rift Lake community.

Natural Habitat

Copadichromis borleyi lives along the deeper rocky coastlines and intermediate zones of Lake Malawi in East Africa, gathering in large shoals in open water where it feeds on drifting zooplankton. The water is hard, alkaline and clear.

Appearance

Dominant males show a rich brick-red to orange body with a blue-sheened head and bright red-orange fins; the "Kadango" and "Red Fin" trade names reflect this fiery finnage. Females and immature fish are a plainer silver-brown. Males grow larger and far more colourful, reaching up to around 20cm.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful and open-swimming, one of the more easygoing haps. It suits a community of similarly sized, non-aggressive Malawi cichlids. Males claim a spawning territory but are rarely bullies. Best kept as one male with several females.

Feeding

An omnivore that in nature is a micropredator on zooplankton. Feed a good-quality cichlid pellet or flake as the staple, with regular frozen mysis, brine shrimp or cyclops. Keep some vegetable content in the diet and avoid overfeeding rich protein.

Care Requirements

Provide a large tank with sand, rockwork for shelter and plenty of open swimming space. Maintain hard, alkaline Rift Lake water with strong filtration and regular water changes. Hardy and undemanding once the water chemistry is right.

Breeding

A maternal mouthbrooder. The female carries eggs and fry in her mouth for around three weeks. A dominant male will clear a spawning site among the rocks; a group with several females gives the best results.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Copadichromis borleyi

Common Name

Red Fin Kadango

Origin

Lake Malawi, East Africa

Maximum Size

15–20cm (males larger than females)

Lifespan

8–10 years

Temperament

Mild (open-water, peaceful for a cichlid)

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

300 litres

Recommended Tank Size

350 litres or larger

Diet

Omnivore (micropredator)

Water Temperature

24–28°C

pH Range

7.8–8.6

GH Range

10–20 dGH (hard)

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Intermediate keepers with a Malawi hap/peacock community

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Mostly — generally leaves plants alone but may disturb them

Suitable Tank Mates

Other peaceful Malawi haps and peacocks of similar size, such as Aulonocara, Protomelas and Placidochromis, plus Synodontis catfish.
