red-rainbowfish-glossolepis-incisus
Red Rainbowfish | Glossolepis incisus

Description

The Red Rainbowfish turns dominant males into a blazing arch of deep red — one of the most striking rainbowfish in the hobby. Peaceful, hardy and always active, it reaches around 12 cm (large males up to 15 cm) and makes a glowing centrepiece for a roomy, well-planted shoal tank.

Natural Habitat

Glossolepis incisus is endemic to Lake Sentani and its surrounding tributaries in Papua, New Guinea, where it swims in warm, clear, hard and slightly alkaline water among aquatic vegetation. It is an open-water shoaler that appreciates space, light and current.

Appearance

A deep-bodied, high-backed rainbowfish. Mature males develop an intense, arching red body and become taller with age, while females and juveniles are a more silvery olive. Colour is at its most spectacular when several males compete for attention in a bright, planted tank, flushing red as they display.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful but very active, it can be a little skittish, so a shoal of six or more (with a good mix of males) settles it and brings out the best colour. It mixes well with other rainbowfish, larger tetras, peaceful barbs, rasboras and gentle catfish that enjoy similar conditions.

Feeding

An omnivore with a healthy appetite. Offer a quality flake or small granule as a staple and supplement with frozen and live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae and bloodworm, plus some plant or spirulina-based food to round out the diet and keep the red glowing.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of around 200 L, with 250 L or larger better for an active shoal of these deep-bodied fish. Keep temperature at 24–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.2 and GH moderately hard to hard, around 9–19. Bright light, open swimming space and clean, well-filtered water suit it best. It is plant safe.

Breeding

An egg-scatterer that lays adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops over an extended period. Eggs receive no parental care and take a couple of weeks to hatch. A conditioned group in warm, clean water will spawn readily, and fry can be reared on fine foods.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Glossolepis incisus

Common Name

Red Rainbowfish, New Guinea Red Rainbowfish

Origin

Lake Sentani, Papua, New Guinea

Maximum Size

Around 12 cm (males up to 15 cm)

Lifespan

6–8 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (active schooling)

Difficulty

Beginner to intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

200 L

Recommended Tank Size

250 L or larger

Diet

Omnivore: flake, granules, frozen and live foods, some plant matter

Water Temperature

24–28 °C

pH Range

7.0–8.2

GH Range

Moderately hard to hard, around 9–19 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Large, bright, planted community aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other rainbowfish, larger tetras, peaceful barbs, rasboras, danios, peaceful loaches and robust catfish.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with slow, timid or very small fish that may be out-competed, fin-nippers, and large aggressive cichlids.
