Gentle and peaceful, this tiny tetra of around 2.5–3 cm brings a warm splash of colour to the planted nano community when kept in a good-sized shoal.

Natural Habitat

Hyphessobrycon roseus comes from the small forest streams and pools of the Guiana Shield in French Guiana and Suriname, where the water is soft, acidic and shaded by overhanging vegetation and leaf litter. It lives among fine plants and roots in gentle, tannin-stained water.

Appearance

A very small, delicate tetra in soft golden-yellow with subtly reddish fins and a warm flush in the tail. Males have slightly more pointed, better-developed fins, while females are rounder. The gentle colour glows best over dark substrate in tannin-stained water and a settled shoal.

Temperament and Compatibility

Very peaceful and rather shy, it should be kept in a group of eight or more, where it feels secure and swims out in the open. It is an ideal resident of a calm nano or soft-water community and should not be mixed with anything boisterous or large enough to intimidate it.

Feeding

A micro-predator omnivore with a tiny mouth. Offer finely crushed micro-flake and small granules as a staple and supplement with fine frozen and live foods such as baby brine shrimp, cyclops, daphnia and micro-worm. Small, frequent feeds suit this little fish best.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of around 45 L, with 60 L or larger better for a comfortable shoal. Keep temperature at 23–27 °C, pH 5.5–7.0 and GH soft, around 1–8. A dark substrate, fine planting, driftwood and leaf litter with subdued light recreate its home. Regular small water changes keep the soft water pristine. It is fully plant safe.

Breeding

An egg-scatterer that provides no parental care. In very soft, acidic water with fine-leaved plants or moss, a well-conditioned pair will scatter tiny eggs among the foliage. Adults eat the eggs, so a separate, dimly-lit breeding tank and fine first foods for the tiny fry give the best results.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Hyphessobrycon roseus

Common Name

Yellow Phantom Tetra, Red-Tail Yellow Phantom Tetra

Origin

French Guiana and Suriname (Guiana Shield), South America

Maximum Size

Around 2.5–3 cm

Lifespan

3–5 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (schooling)

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

45 L

Recommended Tank Size

60 L or larger

Diet

Omnivore (micro): micro-flake, small granules, fine frozen and live foods

Water Temperature

23–27 °C

pH Range

5.5–7.0

GH Range

Soft, around 1–8 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Soft-water nano and planted community aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other small tetras, ember tetras, small rasboras, pygmy corydoras, dwarf cichlids such as rams and small peaceful shrimp.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with large or aggressive cichlids, boisterous barbs, fin-nippers, and any fish big enough to eat a tiny tetra.
