red-veil-tail-male-betta-splendens
Red Veil Tail Male | Betta splendens

Description

The Betta, or Siamese Fighting Fish, is the living jewel of the aquarium — flaring in colours and finnage no other fish can match, with real personality in every individual. This is a red male in the classic long, flowing veiltail form. Given a warm, gently filtered, lidded tank, a betta will dazzle for years. Sold as the individual fish shown, hand-picked from our stock.

Natural Habitat

Betta splendens comes from the warm, still and slow-moving waters of Thailand and neighbouring Southeast Asia — rice paddies, ditches, marshes and floodplains. These waters are often shallow, warm and low in oxygen, which is why the betta evolved its labyrinth organ to breathe air from the surface.

Appearance

This is a veiltail male: a vivid red body carrying long, sweeping fins and a single downward-draping tail. Males are far more colourful and long-finned than females, and colour deepens as the fish matures and settles. Each fish is a unique individual.

Temperament and Compatibility

Males are solitary and will fight other males to the death, and often attack their own reflection or long-finned tank mates, so keep only one male per tank. In a larger, well-planted community they can sometimes be kept with peaceful, short-finned, non-nippy fish, but many bettas do best on their own. Never house two males together.

Feeding

A carnivore with a preference for small meaty foods. Feed a quality betta pellet as the staple and supplement with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp. Feed small amounts and avoid overfeeding, which quickly fouls a small tank.

Care Requirements

Provide a heated, gently filtered tank of at least 5 L, with 20 L or more giving a far more stable and enjoyable home. Keep temperature at 24–28 °C, pH 6.5–7.5 and GH soft to moderately hard, around 5–20. As a labyrinth breather it must be able to reach the surface for air, so keep a lid on (bettas jump) but leave a warm air gap above the water. Gentle flow and some planting suit it best. It is plant safe.

Breeding

A bubble-nesting labyrinth fish. The male builds a raft of bubbles at the surface, embraces the female beneath it and tends the eggs and fry alone, guarding the nest attentively. Breeding requires a dedicated setup and careful conditioning, and the pair must be separated after spawning.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Betta splendens

Common Name

Betta, Siamese Fighting Fish, Red Veiltail Betta

Origin

Southeast Asia (Thailand); aquarium-bred

Maximum Size

Around 6–7 cm including fins

Lifespan

3–5 years with good care

Temperament

Males solitary and aggressive (will fight); females more tolerant

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

5 L (heated and lidded)

Recommended Tank Size

20 L or larger

Diet

Carnivore: betta pellets, frozen and live foods

Water Temperature

24–28 °C

pH Range

6.5–7.5

GH Range

Soft to moderately hard, around 5–20 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Heated, lidded betta tanks or calm planted communities

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

If kept in a community, suitable tank mates include peaceful, short-finned fish such as small rasboras, ember tetras, Corydoras, kuhli loaches and snails.
