redline-rasbora-trigonopoma-pauciperforata
Redline Rasbora | Trigonopoma pauciperforata

Description

The Redline Rasbora glows with a vivid red lateral stripe over a translucent, olive-gold body — pure magic in a soft, dark-water shoal. Small (around 5–7 cm) and peaceful, it is best kept in a big group in a planted blackwater tank, where the whole school lights up together.

Natural Habitat

Trigonopoma pauciperforata comes from the peat swamps and forest streams of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo in Southeast Asia. These are shallow, shaded, tannin-stained blackwaters — soft, acidic and dark — with dense marginal vegetation and leaf litter over the bottom.

Appearance

A slender, streamlined rasbora. A brilliant red to red-gold stripe runs the length of the body over a semi-transparent, olive base, and the colour is at its most intense over dark substrate in soft, tannin-stained water. The sexes are similar, though females are a little fuller-bodied.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful and shoaling, it feels secure and shows its best colour in a group of at least eight to ten. It mixes well with other small, gentle soft-water fish and shrimp, but is easily out-competed by larger or boisterous tank mates and can be a little shy without the confidence of numbers.

Feeding

A micro-predator and omnivore with a small mouth. Feed a quality micro-pellet or crushed flake as the staple and supplement with small frozen and live foods such as daphnia, cyclops, baby brine shrimp and micro-worm to bring out condition and colour.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of around 60 L, with 90 L or larger better for a proper shoal. Keep temperature at 23–27 °C, pH 5.0–7.0 and GH soft, around 1–10. This species is a little more sensitive than some rasboras and should only go into a mature, stable, well-established tank. Soft, slightly acidic water, gentle flow, dark substrate, driftwood and dim lighting suit it best. It is plant safe.

Breeding

An egg-scattering species that lays adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants and gives no parental care. In soft, acidic water a well-conditioned group may scatter eggs among mossy planting; the adults will eat the spawn, so dense cover or a separate rearing tank is needed to raise fry.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Trigonopoma pauciperforata

Common Name

Redline Rasbora, Glowlight Rasbora, Red-striped Rasbora (formerly Rasbora pauciperforata)

Origin

Southeast Asia (Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo)

Maximum Size

Around 5–7 cm

Lifespan

Around 5 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (shoaling)

Difficulty

Beginner to intermediate (a little sensitive)

Minimum Tank Size

60 L

Recommended Tank Size

90 L or larger

Diet

Micro-omnivore: micro-pellets, crushed flake, small frozen and live foods

Water Temperature

23–27 °C

pH Range

5.0–7.0

GH Range

Soft, around 1–10 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Soft-water, planted blackwater community aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other small, peaceful soft-water fish such as other rasboras, small tetras, pygmy Corydoras, kuhli loaches, dwarf gouramis and peaceful dwarf shrimp.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with large, boisterous or predatory fish, fin-nippers, and species that need hard, alkaline water.
