The 'Resha' is a prized geographic form. Reaching around 20 cm and needing space, hard alkaline water and a big sandy tank, this is a breathtaking showpiece for the committed rift-lake keeper.

Natural Habitat

Cyathopharynx furcifer is endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa, living over the intermediate zone where sand meets rock. The lake is warm, very hard and strongly alkaline, and males establish large territories on open sand where they build crater-shaped bowers to court passing females.

Appearance

A large, elegant cichlid. Mature males shimmer with metallic blue-green scales and carry long, filamentous pelvic fins tipped with bright yellow, flashing intensely when displaying. Females and juveniles are a plainer silvery-grey. The 'Resha' form is named for its particular colour and locality.

Temperament and Compatibility

Semi-aggressive and territorial, especially between males, and it needs a lot of space to settle. It is best kept as a group with several females per male, either in a species tank or a spacious Tanganyikan community with other similarly sized, non-competing cichlids. Males can be rough with each other in cramped quarters.

Feeding

A micro-predator that feeds on plankton and small invertebrates in the wild. Feed a quality cichlid flake or small pellet as the staple and supplement with small frozen foods such as cyclops, mysis and brine shrimp. Avoid overly rich or mammalian foods, which rift-lake cichlids handle poorly.

Care Requirements

This is a demanding, space-hungry fish: provide a minimum of around 450 L, with 680 L or more strongly preferred, and a large open area of soft sand for bower-building. Keep temperature at 24–28 °C, pH 8.5–9.0 and GH hard, around 10–20. Pristine, stable, strongly alkaline water with powerful filtration is essential. It is not kept with plants in a natural set-up.

Breeding

A maternal mouthbrooder. The male builds a large sand crater and displays with his shimmering fins; after spawning the female broods the eggs and fry in her mouth for around three weeks. Successful breeding needs a settled group, ample space and excellent water quality.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Cyathopharynx furcifer 'Resha'

Common Name

Featherfin Cichlid, Furcifer Featherfin

Origin

Lake Tanganyika, East Africa

Maximum Size

Around 20 cm (up to about 21 cm)

Lifespan

8–10 years with good care

Temperament

Semi-aggressive and territorial

Difficulty

Intermediate to advanced

Minimum Tank Size

450 L

Recommended Tank Size

680 L or larger

Diet

Micro-predator: quality flake or pellet, small frozen foods

Water Temperature

24–28 °C

pH Range

8.5–9.0

GH Range

Hard, around 10–20 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Large, hard-water Lake Tanganyika aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Not typically kept with plants

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other Lake Tanganyika cichlids of similar size and temperament, such as featherfins, larger Cyprichromis, Ophthalmotilapia and peaceful sand-dwellers, plus hardy Synodontis catfish, all in a spacious tank.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with small or timid fish, soft-water species, and boisterous mbuna-type cichlids that will out-compete this fish for space.
