It has no true roots or leaves; it is a mass of branching green threads that can float freely or be tied down and grown as a glittering lawn.

Natural Habitat

Riccia is a cosmopolitan liverwort found on still and slow waters across much of the world, where it naturally drifts at the surface in a loose mat. In the aquarium it recreates that either as a floating tangle or, with effort, as a submerged carpet tied over rock or mesh under good light.

Appearance

A healthy clump is a dense, springy mass of forked, bright green branches with no stems or leaves as such. Floating, it forms a soft raft; tied down and given light and CO2, it grows into a fine bubbling carpet that traps oxygen. The portion sold is a loose clump you divide and either float or attach.

Placement and Aquascaping

It can be used floating for surface cover and fry protection, or as a foreground to midground carpet when tied to hardscape. Because it is a liverwort with no roots, it will not anchor itself, so it must be held in place with thread or mesh, and it needs regular trimming or it lifts off in buoyant chunks.

Planting and Propagation

Do not bury it. To carpet, sandwich a thin layer between two pieces of mesh or tie it over stone with cotton thread, and trim it as it thickens so it does not float away. It propagates simply by division: break off a piece and it keeps growing.

Care Requirements

Moderate to high light is needed for a compact submerged carpet; floating, it manages on less. CO2 is beneficial and, for a dense pearling lawn, close to essential. A little liquid fertiliser helps; keep the water 20–28 °C, pH around 6.0–8.0. Note it can be sensitive to liquid carbon supplements, which may cause it to melt if overdosed, so dose conservatively.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Riccia fluitans

Common Name

Crystalwort, Riccia

Origin

Cosmopolitan (worldwide)

Maximum Height

1–4 cm (carpet)

Growth Rate

Moderate to Fast

Difficulty

Intermediate

Placement

Floating or Epiphyte carpet (foreground/midground)

Lighting

Moderate to High

CO2 Requirement

Beneficial (near-essential for a submerged carpet)

Fertilisation

Liquid fertiliser (optional)

Water Temperature

20–28 °C

pH Range

6.0–8.0

GH Range

Soft to moderately hard

Propagation

Division of the clump

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Pearling carpets, surface cover and shrimp tanks

Suitable Tank Mates

Shrimp, snails and small peaceful fish are ideal, and shrimp and fry love sheltering in it.
