rosy-barb-pethia-conchonius
Rosy Barb | Pethia conchonius

Description

The Rosy Barb is a hardy, active classic — dominant males flush a brilliant rosy-red in a busy shoal, and the species even tolerates cooler water. Robust, adaptable and easy to keep, it grows larger than many realise (up to around 14 cm) and makes a wonderful, lively fish for a roomy community or an unheated indoor tank.

Natural Habitat

Pethia conchonius comes from the streams, rivers and lakes of northern India and Bangladesh, including cooler subtropical waters. It naturally lives in clear, well-oxygenated water over gravel and among plants, which is why it copes so well with a wide range of temperatures.

Appearance

A deep, muscular little barb. Breeding and dominant males turn a striking rosy pink to red, with a dark spot near the tail and black-edged fins, while females are a more olive-silver. Colour intensifies dramatically in a good group and in cooler, well-lit conditions. Long-fin and colour-selected strains are also available.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful and very active, but a natural shoaler that can nip fins if kept in too small a group. Keep a shoal of six or more to spread out the energy and settle their behaviour. They suit active communities with other barbs, larger tetras, rainbowfish, danios and peaceful catfish.

Feeding

An easy-going omnivore. Offer a quality flake or granule as a staple and supplement with frozen and live foods such as bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp, plus some vegetable or spirulina content. A varied diet keeps their colour rich and their bodies well-conditioned.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of around 100 L, with 130 L or larger better for a proper active shoal. They are unusually tolerant of temperature, thriving anywhere from about 18–24 °C, and can be kept in an unheated indoor tank in temperate rooms. Keep pH 6.0–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water, GH around 5–19. They appreciate open swimming space, some current and robust planting. It is plant safe, though it may nibble very soft leaves.

Breeding

One of the easiest egg-scatterers to breed. A conditioned pair will scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants in the morning, then take no further interest. Parents will eat the eggs, so a separate spawning tank with a mesh or plant cover gives the best fry survival.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Pethia conchonius

Common Name

Rosy Barb

Origin

Northern India and Bangladesh

Maximum Size

Around 8–10 cm, up to 14 cm

Lifespan

5 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (active schooling); can nip if under-grouped

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

100 L

Recommended Tank Size

130 L or larger

Diet

Omnivore: flake, granules, frozen and live foods, some vegetable matter

Water Temperature

18–24 °C (tolerates cool water)

pH Range

6.0–7.5

GH Range

Soft to moderately hard, around 5–19 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Active community and unheated indoor aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes (may nibble very soft leaves)

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other barbs, larger tetras, danios, rainbowfish, rosy or gold barbs, and peaceful bottom-dwellers such as corydoras and larger loaches.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with slow, long-finned fish such as bettas and fancy guppies that may be nipped, and very small or timid species.
