rusty-corydoras-osteogaster-rabauti
Rusty Corydoras | Osteogaster rabauti

Description

The Rusty Cory wears warm reddish-brown, rust-toned colours and the gentle, shoaling nature the genus is loved for. Reaching around 6 cm, it is a hardy, characterful bottom-dweller — always pottering the substrate in a busy little group — and a lovely, easy addition to the soft-water community aquarium.

Natural Habitat

Osteogaster rabauti (long known as Corydoras rabauti) comes from the upper Amazon in Brazil, Colombia and Peru, where it lives over soft substrates in warm, soft, slightly acidic waters among leaf litter and submerged wood. It forages in groups across the bottom for small invertebrates and organic matter.

Appearance

A classic rounded corydoras shape in warm rusty-brown to coppery tones, often with a darker band running along the back and through the body. Juveniles carry a bolder dark stripe that softens with age. Like all corys it has bony armour plating and small barbels around the mouth for sifting the substrate.

Temperament and Compatibility

Thoroughly peaceful and gregarious, it should be kept in a group of at least six to feel secure and stay active. It is an ideal community bottom-dweller, mixing happily with tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, gouramis and other calm fish. A soft sand or smooth, rounded-gravel substrate protects its delicate barbels.

Feeding

An omnivore and bottom-forager. Offer good-quality sinking pellets or wafers as a staple, along with frozen and live foods such as bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp. It will help clean up leftover food, but should always be fed its own portion so it never goes hungry.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of around 90 L, with 110 L or larger better for a good group. Keep temperature at 20–27 °C, pH 5.5–7.2 and soft to moderately hard water, GH around 2–15. A soft substrate, gentle filtration, clean water and some shade or planting suit it well. A small note of caution: like other corys it can secrete a mild toxin from the pectoral spines if severely stressed, so acclimatise gently. It is plant safe.

Breeding

An egg-depositing species. In the classic corydoras 'T-position', the female carries a few eggs in her pelvic fins and sticks them to plants, glass or décor. A cooler water change can trigger spawning. Eggs and fry receive no parental care, so a separate rearing setup improves survival.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Osteogaster rabauti (formerly Corydoras rabauti)

Common Name

Rusty Corydoras, Rust Cory

Origin

Upper Amazon (Brazil, Colombia, Peru)

Maximum Size

Around 6 cm

Lifespan

5–8 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (schooling)

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

90 L

Recommended Tank Size

110 L or larger

Diet

Omnivore (bottom): sinking pellets, wafers, frozen and live foods

Water Temperature

20–27 °C

pH Range

5.5–7.2

GH Range

Soft to moderately hard, around 2–15 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Peaceful soft-water community aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include small tetras, rasboras, danios, dwarf cichlids, gouramis, other corydoras and peaceful shrimp.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with large or aggressive cichlids, boisterous or predatory fish, and sharp or coarse gravel that can damage the barbels.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/rusty-corydoras-osteogaster-43885220167971.webp?v=1790306097
