salt-and-pepper-corydoras-hoplisoma-hasbrosus
Salt And Pepper Corydoras | Corydoras habrosus

Description

The Salt & Pepper Cory is a true dwarf corydoras — tiny, peaceful and perfect for a planted nano tank. Reaching only around 3–3.5 cm, it is the largest of the pygmy corys but still small enough to keep in a good-sized shoal, where the group potters happily across the substrate in a busy little gang.

Natural Habitat

Corydoras habrosus comes from the shallow, slow-moving streams and flooded margins of the Río Orinoco basin in Venezuela and Colombia. These are warm, soft, gently flowing waters over fine substrate, with plenty of plants and leaf litter to forage among.

Appearance

A miniature, classic corydoras shape in silvery-white peppered with fine black spots and a broken dark line along the body, giving the 'salt and pepper' look. Unlike the closely related pygmy cory, which shoals in open water, this species spends most of its time on the bottom. Females are a little larger and rounder than males.

Temperament and Compatibility

Thoroughly peaceful and gregarious, it needs the company of its own kind — keep a group of at least eight (more is better) so they feel secure and stay active. It is ideal for peaceful nano and community tanks with small, gentle tankmates. A soft sand substrate protects its delicate barbels.

Feeding

A small-mouthed omnivore and bottom-forager. Offer finely crushed sinking foods, micro-pellets and small wafers as a staple, along with frozen and live foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia and micro-worm. Make sure food is small enough to reach the bottom for these little fish.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of around 40 L, with 60 L or larger better for a good group. Keep temperature at 22–26 °C, pH 6.0–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water, GH around 2–15. A soft sand substrate, gentle filtration, clean water and planting suit it best. It is fully plant safe and an excellent choice for delicate aquascapes.

Breeding

An egg-depositing species that spawns in the typical corydoras fashion, the female carrying a few eggs in her pelvic fins and placing them on plants, glass or décor. Cooler, clean water changes can trigger spawning. Eggs and fry receive no parental care, so a separate rearing tank improves survival.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Corydoras habrosus

Common Name

Salt & Pepper Corydoras, Dwarf Cory

Origin

Río Orinoco basin (Venezuela, Colombia)

Maximum Size

Around 3–3.5 cm

Lifespan

3–5 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (schooling)

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

40 L

Recommended Tank Size

60 L or larger

Diet

Omnivore (bottom): crushed sinking foods, micro-pellets, frozen and live foods

Water Temperature

22–26 °C

pH Range

6.0–7.5

GH Range

Soft to moderately hard, around 2–15 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Peaceful planted nano and community aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include small tetras, rasboras, pygmy and other small corydoras, dwarf cichlids such as apistogramma, small gouramis and peaceful shrimp.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with large or aggressive fish, boisterous or predatory species, and sharp gravel that can damage the barbels.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/Salt_and_Pepper_Corydoras_c3d031d6-5210-4a52-b074-2002892e0824.jpg?v=1781698808
https://nicksaquariumoceanariumterrarium.com.au/products/salt-and-pepper-corydoras-hoplisoma-hasbrosus
