Active, hardy and full of energy, it stays small at around 3–5 cm and makes a lively, glinting addition to a planted community, best appreciated in a good-sized group.

Natural Habitat

Hasemania nana comes from the São Francisco river basin of eastern Brazil, where it lives in small, clear to slightly stained tributaries and streams, in soft to moderately hard water among vegetation and open runs, shoaling in the mid-water.

Appearance

A slender, coppery-tan to golden body is finished with striking silvery-white tips on the dorsal, anal and tail fins. Males are a deeper coppery colour, while females are more silvery-yellow and fuller-bodied. Unusually for a tetra, it lacks the small adipose fin. Colour intensifies as a confident group settles in.

Temperament and Compatibility

Active and generally peaceful, but it can be a little nippy if kept in too small a group, so a shoal of eight or more keeps its behaviour in check and looks far better. It mixes well with other small, active community fish — tetras, rasboras, danios, dwarf cichlids and small catfish — that share its conditions.

Feeding

An easy micro-omnivore. A quality flake or micro-granule makes a good staple, supplemented with small frozen and live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp and microworm to bring out the best colour and condition.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of around 75 L, with 100 L or larger better for a proper shoal. Keep temperature at 22–28 °C, pH 6.0–7.5 and GH soft to moderately hard, around 4–15. It appreciates gentle flow, some planting and open swimming space, and slightly softer water shows its warm colour at its best. It is plant safe.

Breeding

An egg-scattering species that spawns among fine-leaved plants and gives no parental care. A well-conditioned group in soft, slightly acidic water will scatter adhesive eggs that hatch in a day or two; fry are reared on infusoria and then fine live foods. Adults will eat their own eggs if allowed.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Hasemania nana

Common Name

Silver Tip Tetra, Silvertip Tetra

Origin

Eastern Brazil (São Francisco basin)

Maximum Size

Around 3–5 cm

Lifespan

3–5 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (active schooling; keep in good numbers)

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

75 L

Recommended Tank Size

100 L or larger

Diet

Omnivore (micro): flake, micro-granules, small frozen and live foods

Water Temperature

22–28 °C

pH Range

6.0–7.5

GH Range

Soft to moderately hard, around 4–15 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Planted community aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other small tetras, rasboras, danios, dwarf cichlids, corydoras and other small, peaceful catfish.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with slow, long-finned fish that may have their fins nipped, and with large or aggressive fish that will bully or eat this small shoaler.
