snow-white-halfmoon-fighting-fish-betta-splendens
Snow White Halfmoon Fighting Fish | Betta splendens

Description

The Snow White Halfmoon is the Siamese Fighting Fish at its most refined — pure, clean white finnage that opens into a full 180-degree "halfmoon" spread when the male flares. Every betta is an individual with real personality, and at around 6–7 cm this one is a living jewel for a warm, gently filtered nano tank. Sold as the individual fish, hand-picked from our stock.

Natural Habitat

Betta splendens originates from the still and slow-moving shallows of Thailand and neighbouring Southeast Asia — rice paddies, ditches and floodplain pools that are warm, soft and often low in oxygen. To cope, the betta breathes air at the surface through a labyrinth organ, an adaptation that lets it thrive where other fish cannot.

Appearance

This is a halfmoon-tailed male in solid, icy white across body and fins, with the long, flowing dorsal, anal and caudal fins the strain is prized for. When displaying, the tail forms a clean half-circle. Females and short-finned forms are stockier; the long finnage here marks it as a show male.

Temperament and Compatibility

Males are solitary and territorial — two males will fight, and they cannot be housed together. A single male can live alone or as a centrepiece among small, peaceful, non-nippy tank mates in a larger planted tank. Avoid fin-nippers and other flashy, long-finned fish that may be mistaken for a rival.

Feeding

A surface-feeding carnivore. Feed a quality betta pellet as a staple, with frozen and live treats such as bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp for colour and condition. Feed small amounts and avoid overfeeding, which fouls the water and bloats the fish.

Care Requirements

Provide a heated, gently filtered tank of at least 5 L, though 20 L or more gives far better stability and room for plants. Keep the temperature at 24–28 °C, pH 6.0–7.5 and soft to neutral water. Because it breathes air from the surface, always keep a lid with a small air gap above the water, and keep the surface calm. It is plant safe.

Breeding

A bubble-nesting species: the male builds a raft of bubbles at the surface, entices the female beneath it in an embrace, then collects the eggs and tends the nest alone. The pair must be separated after spawning as the male guards the eggs and fry, and adults will otherwise fight.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Betta splendens

Common Name

Snow White Halfmoon Betta, Siamese Fighting Fish

Origin

Southeast Asia (Thailand) — captive-bred strain

Maximum Size

Around 6–7 cm

Lifespan

3–5 years with good care

Temperament

Males solitary (will fight); females more tolerant

Difficulty

Beginner

Minimum Tank Size

5 L (heated & lidded)

Recommended Tank Size

20 L or larger, planted

Diet

Carnivore: betta pellets, frozen and live bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp

Water Temperature

24–28 °C

pH Range

6.0–7.5

GH Range

Soft to neutral, around 3–15 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Heated, lidded nano and planted community aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates (in a larger tank) include small peaceful schoolers such as ember tetras, harlequin rasboras, corydoras, kuhli loaches and snails.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with other male bettas, fin-nippers such as tiger barbs, and other brightly coloured long-finned fish like guppies that may trigger aggression.

https://nicksaquariumoceanariumterrarium.com.au/products/snow-white-halfmoon-fighting-fish-betta-splendens
