splashing-tetra-copella-arnoldi
Splashing Tetra | Copella arnoldi

Description

The Splashing Tetra has one of the most extraordinary tricks in the fish world — courting pairs leap clean out of the water together to lay their eggs on an overhanging leaf, then the male splashes water up to keep them wet until they hatch. Peaceful, elegant and endlessly fascinating, it reaches around 6–7 cm and is a superb surface-loving shoaler for a soft, shaded tank.

Natural Habitat

Copella arnoldi is native to the lower Amazon basin and coastal river systems of Guyana and northern Brazil, where it lives in slow, soft, tannin-stained blackwaters shaded by overhanging bankside vegetation. It spends most of its time in the upper layers of the water beneath trailing leaves and roots.

Appearance

A slim, pike-shaped characin with a slightly upturned mouth built for surface feeding. The body is fawn to pale gold with a dark stripe through the eye and rows of tiny reddish spots along the flanks. Males are larger and more colourful, with extended, red-flushed dorsal and anal fins.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful and best kept in a group of six or more, where males display to one another and to females without harm. It suits a soft-water community of other calm fish, but its habit of hanging near the surface and leaping means tank mates should be equally gentle.

Feeding

An omnivore that feeds mainly at and near the surface. Offer floating and slow-sinking flake and micro-pellets, plus frozen and live foods such as daphnia, mosquito larvae, small bloodworm and fruit flies, which it takes eagerly from the top.

Care Requirements

Provide a planted aquarium of at least 60 L, ideally 75 L or more, with a dark substrate, soft dim lighting and floating or overhanging plants. Keep the temperature at 23–29 °C, pH 5.5–7.5 and soft to neutral water. A tight-fitting lid is essential — this is an accomplished jumper — and leaving a little space above the water suits its unusual spawning. It is plant safe.

Breeding

Its remarkable spawning behaviour is the whole point: a pair leaps together and clings briefly to a leaf above the waterline, depositing a few eggs at a time until 100–200 are laid. The male then stays below, splashing water over the clutch every few minutes for two to three days until the fry hatch and drop into the water.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Copella arnoldi

Common Name

Splashing Tetra, Splash Tetra, Jumping Characin

Origin

Lower Amazon basin and coastal rivers (Guyana, Brazil)

Maximum Size

Around 6–7 cm (males larger)

Lifespan

3–5 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (schooling)

Difficulty

Beginner to Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

60 L

Recommended Tank Size

75 L or larger, planted

Diet

Omnivore (surface): floating flake, micro-pellets, frozen and live foods

Water Temperature

23–29 °C

pH Range

5.5–7.5

GH Range

Soft to neutral, around 2–12 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Soft-water planted community aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other peaceful tetras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids, corydoras and small rasboras in a soft-water community.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with large or aggressive fish, boisterous surface feeders, and fin-nippers.
