staurogyne-repens
Staurogyne Repens

Description

Staurogyne repens is a compact, fresh-green foreground plant that forms a low, bushy carpet of small rounded leaves. It is hardier than most carpeting plants and a good stepping-stone for aquascapers not quite ready for the fussier ground covers. Supplied as a clean, lab-grown tissue-culture cup — pest-, snail- and algae-free, and ready to plant.

Natural Habitat

The species was collected growing on rocks in the Rio Cristalino in Mato Grosso, in the southern Amazon of Brazil, where it lives in bright, flowing, soft water. Recreating that means good light and steady flow in the aquarium; warm, soft to moderately hard water suits it best.

Appearance

Sturdy, branching stems carry small, oval, deep-green leaves in a dense, low mound. Under good light it stays compact at around 3–5 cm; in dimmer light it stretches upward and looser, to 10 cm or more. The tissue-culture portion supplied is a small clump of young shoots that will spread sideways and knit together as it establishes.

Placement and Aquascaping

A foreground to low-midground plant, excellent for carpets, transitions and softening the base of hardscape. Split the culture into small clumps and plant them a few centimetres apart across the foreground; they fill the gaps over a few weeks. Regular light trimming encourages side shoots and keeps the mat tight and even.

Planting and Propagation

Rinse the nutrient gel from the roots, divide the clump into portions of a few stems each, and plant each portion into the substrate with tweezers. Propagate by trimming the tops or lifting rooted side shoots and replanting them elsewhere — each replant thickens the carpet.

Care Requirements

Moderate light keeps it compact and green; low light makes it leggy. CO2 is not essential but noticeably improves compactness, spread and overall health, so it is beneficial rather than required. Feed through both root tabs and a liquid fertiliser. Comfortable at 20–28 °C in soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water. Growth is slow to moderate.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Staurogyne repens

Common Name

Staurogyne repens

Origin

Brazil (Rio Cristalino, Amazon)

Maximum Height

3–10 cm

Growth Rate

Slow to Moderate

Difficulty

Beginner to Intermediate

Placement

Foreground / Low midground

Lighting

Moderate to High

CO2 Requirement

Beneficial

Fertilisation

Root tabs & liquid fertiliser

Water Temperature

20–28 °C

pH Range

6.0–7.5

GH Range

Soft to moderately hard (3–15 °dGH)

Propagation

Cuttings & side shoots (replant)

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Planted foregrounds, carpets, nano and aquascape tanks

Suitable Tank Mates

Ideal with peaceful community fish, small tetras, rasboras, dwarf shrimp and snails, which help keep the low leaves clean of debris and algae.

Avoid Keeping With

Diggers and foragers — goldfish, larger cichlids, loaches that burrow — will disturb the shallow-rooted carpet.
