strombus-snail
Strombus Snail (Strawberry Conch) | Conomurex luhuanus

Description

The Strawberry Conch is a charming and hard-working sand-bed cleaner. It ploughs beneath the substrate on its muscular foot, sifting out detritus and algae and keeping the sand aerated and bright. Endlessly busy and completely reef safe, it is a favourite natural way to maintain a healthy sand bed. It is also fascinating to watch, peering about on its two stalked eyes.

Natural Habitat

Conomurex luhuanus (formerly Strombus luhuanus) inhabits sandy flats among coral in the shallow waters of the Indo-Pacific, where it spends much of its time partly buried, grazing and sifting the substrate.

Appearance

A glossy, conical shell with a distinctive bright red-to-orange interior aperture, giving the species its "strawberry" and "red-mouth" common names. Most reach around 5–8 cm. Two long eye stalks and a probing snout emerge as it forages.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful and reef safe, the Strawberry Conch keeps to the sand bed and troubles nothing. It coexists happily with corals, fish and other invertebrates. Predatory hermit crabs and larger crabs may attack it for its shell.

Feeding

An omnivorous sand-sifter, it feeds on detritus, diatoms and film algae drawn from the substrate. In a mature tank it forages for itself, but the algae and detritus already present are often not enough — supplement with sinking algae pellets or wafers so it does not slowly starve.

Care Requirements

A deep, open sand bed of fine to medium grain, ideally 5 cm or more, is essential, as this is where the conch feeds and buries. Drip-acclimate slowly, avoid all copper-based medications, and keep calcium and alkalinity stable for shell health. Maintain good water quality and provide enough open sand for it to work.

Breeding

Conchs have separate sexes and lay gelatinous egg strings in the sand. The larvae are planktonic and are not reared in the home aquarium.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Conomurex luhuanus

Common Name

Strawberry Conch / Strombus Snail

Origin

Indo-Pacific

Maximum Size

8 cm

Lifespan

3–4 years

Temperament

Peaceful

Difficulty

Easy

Minimum Tank Size

115 litres

Recommended Tank Size

200+ litres

Diet

Omnivore — detritus, diatoms & film algae on sand; supplement with algae pellets

Water Temperature

23–27 °C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

Specific Gravity

1.023–1.026

Suitable For

Reef aquariums with an open sand bed

Reef Safe

Yes

Plant Safe

Not applicable (marine)

Suitable Tank Mates

Peaceful reef fish, corals, grazing snails, cleaner shrimp and other reef-safe invertebrates.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid predatory hermit crabs, larger crabs, and any snail-eating fish.
