super-male-scotts-fairy-wrasse
Super Male Scotts Fairy Wrasse | Cirrhilabrus scottorum

Description

The Super Male Scott's Fairy Wrasse is a dazzling terminal-phase male in full colour, blazing with red, green, blue and violet across the body and fins. Active and constantly on the move, it is one of the most spectacular fairy wrasses for a peaceful reef. As a super male it shows the very best colouration the species has to offer.

Natural Habitat

Cirrhilabrus scottorum is found in the western Pacific, particularly around Fiji, Tonga and the Coral Sea, on coral-rich reef slopes and rubble zones. Fairy wrasses gather in loose groups above the reef, feeding on drifting zooplankton and darting to cover when threatened. In the aquarium it appreciates plenty of live rock, open swimming space above the rockwork and a peaceful community. A mature reef with good flow suits it perfectly.

Appearance

The terminal-phase super male is intensely coloured, typically deep red to green over the back with brilliant blue and violet in the fins and a distinctive dark blotch on the flank, all of which flare during display. Females and sub-males are less vivid. Reaching around 13 cm, it is a medium-small wrasse. Healthy specimens are bright, alert and swim actively in the open water column.

Temperament and Compatibility

Generally peaceful, this fairy wrasse mixes beautifully with most reef fish, though males can be territorial towards other fairy wrasses or similar-looking species. It is best kept as a single male, or a male with several females, and combines well with tangs, clownfish, gobies, anthias and other peaceful reef fish. It poses no threat to corals. A calm community lets its colours and confidence shine.

Feeding

A carnivore and zooplankton feeder, it should be offered a varied diet of frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, copepods and quality marine flake and pellets. Frequent small feedings, at least twice daily, suit its active metabolism. Most individuals feed readily once settled. A varied diet keeps its intense colouration at its best.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of 300 L, with 400 L or more recommended for swimming room and long-term health. Maintain 24–27°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity around 1.020–1.026. Aquascape with live rock and open water above it, and provide good flow. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as fairy wrasses are notorious jumpers, especially when startled. It is a hardy fish once settled into a peaceful reef.

Breeding

Like other wrasses, Scott's Fairy Wrasse is a protogynous hermaphrodite, with females able to transform into colourful males, and it is a pelagic spawner. Spawning displays may be seen in the aquarium, but rearing the tiny planktonic larvae is beyond typical home systems. For keepers the reward is the fish's spectacular colour and active behaviour rather than breeding.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Cirrhilabrus scottorum

Common Name

Scott's Fairy Wrasse (Super Male)

Origin

Western Pacific reef slopes (Fiji, Tonga, Coral Sea)

Maximum Size

13 cm

Lifespan

5–8 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful (males territorial to other fairy wrasses)

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

300 L

Recommended Tank Size

400 L or larger

Diet

Carnivore and zooplankton feeder; mysis, brine, copepods and marine pellets

Water Temperature

24–27°C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020–1.026

Suitable For

Peaceful reef and community marine systems

Reef Safe

Reef safe (may eat very small ornamental shrimp)

Plant Safe

Not applicable

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include tangs, clownfish, gobies, anthias, cardinalfish and other peaceful reef fish, along with females of the same species.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with other male fairy wrasses or similar-looking species in smaller tanks, and very aggressive fish that may harass or outcompete it.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/7236/5347/files/super-male-scotts-fairy-wras-43090663276835.webp?v=1790306140
