tang-yellow
Tang Yellow | Zebrasoma flavescens

Description

The Yellow Tang is one of the most recognisable and beloved marine fish in the hobby, a vivid, uniform lemon-yellow surgeonfish that brings brilliant colour and constant activity to a reef. Hardy, active and full of character, it grazes tirelessly over the rockwork throughout the day. Reaching around 20 cm, it is a superb centrepiece for a larger reef or fish-only system.

Natural Habitat

Zebrasoma flavescens is found in the Pacific, most famously around Hawaii, on shallow coral reefs and lava rock where algae is plentiful. It spends the day grazing across reef surfaces, often in loose groups, and shelters in the rock at night. In the aquarium it appreciates plenty of live rock for grazing, open swimming space and strong, well-oxygenated water movement. A mature system with algae growth suits its natural feeding habits well.

Appearance

The body is deep, disc-shaped and an even, brilliant yellow, with a long snout for grazing into crevices and a white caudal spine at the base of the tail. At night the colour can fade to a duller yellow with a pale side patch, returning to full brightness by day. Its adult size of around 20 cm should be considered before purchase. Healthy specimens are vividly coloured, full-bodied and constantly grazing.

Temperament and Compatibility

Generally peaceful towards unrelated species, the Yellow Tang can be semi-aggressive towards other tangs, especially other Zebrasoma or similarly shaped and coloured fish. It is best kept as the only yellow or sail-fin tang unless the system is very large. It mixes well with clownfish, wrasses, angelfish, gobies and other reef community fish. Its caudal spine is sharp, so handle with care.

Feeding

Primarily a herbivore, the Yellow Tang should be offered a diet rich in marine algae: dried nori, spirulina and prepared herbivore foods, ideally several times a day, supplemented with occasional mysis or brine shrimp. A strong vegetable-based diet supports its colour, health and immune system, and helps reduce aggression. Access to natural algae in the tank is also beneficial. It is an eager, reliable feeder.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum of 280 L, with 400 L or more recommended for swimming room and long-term health. Maintain 24–27°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity around 1.020–1.026. Strong flow, high oxygen levels and efficient filtration suit this active grazer. Aquascape with plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. It is a hardy, long-lived fish when kept in a spacious, stable system.

Breeding

Surgeonfish are open-water spawners with a long planktonic larval stage. Captive breeding of Zebrasoma flavescens has been achieved commercially through specialised aquaculture, which has helped ease pressure on wild populations, but it is not achievable in the home aquarium. For keepers the goal is a healthy, well-fed fish in a spacious reef rather than breeding.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Zebrasoma flavescens

Common Name

Yellow Tang

Origin

Pacific coral reefs, especially Hawaii

Maximum Size

20 cm

Lifespan

10–20 years or more with good care

Temperament

Peaceful, semi-aggressive to other tangs

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

280 L

Recommended Tank Size

400 L or larger

Diet

Herbivore; marine algae, nori, spirulina and prepared greens

Water Temperature

24–27°C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020–1.026

Suitable For

Reef and fish-only systems with swimming room

Reef Safe

Reef safe

Plant Safe

Not applicable

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include clownfish, wrasses, angelfish, gobies, cardinalfish and other peaceful to semi-aggressive reef fish of similar size.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with other Zebrasoma tangs or similarly shaped and coloured fish in smaller tanks, and very aggressive species that may harass it.
