tomini-tang-juv
Tomini Tang Juv | Ctenochaetus tominiensis

Description

The Tomini Tang is a compact, hard-working bristletooth surgeonfish and one of the best algae-grazers for a medium reef. This is a juvenile, so its colours and body depth will develop as it matures, but it already grazes detritus and film algae busily across the rock. Adults reach around 15 cm, so plan for its full size and swimming needs from the start.

Natural Habitat

Bristletooth tangs like the Tomini live on coral-rich slopes and lagoons of the Western Pacific, working over rock and rubble with their fine, comb-like teeth to lift detritus and algal film. Recreating this means providing mature live rock with grazing surfaces, open swimming room and steady, well-oxygenated flow in a settled system.

Appearance

Juveniles show a slimmer body that shifts from blue-grey to olive-brown, with developing yellow highlights in the dorsal and anal fins and fine speckling around the face. Colour and body depth intensify as the fish grows and settles. Like all surgeonfish it carries a sharp scalpel near the tail base. A healthy juvenile is alert, grazing actively and free of a pinched belly or laboured breathing.

Temperament and Compatibility

Temperament is peaceful towards dissimilar fish but semi-aggressive towards other tangs, particularly other bristletooths and similar shapes. Juveniles are generally easy-going and settle well into a community, but keep only one Ctenochaetus per tank unless the system is very large. In a medium to large reef it mixes well with clownfish, wrasses, angels, chromis and other community species.

Feeding

Feeding should be mostly herbivorous. Its bristle teeth are made for grazing film algae and detritus, so offer dried marine algae and nori on a clip, algae-based flakes and pellets, and a rotation of herbivore foods. Occasional meaty foods such as mysis are taken. Frequent small feeds help a growing juvenile hold condition and colour.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum aquarium of 265 L, with 340 L or larger recommended for the adult size it will grow into. Maintain temperature at 24–26°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity around 1.020–1.026. Strong, well-oxygenated flow and mature live rock suit it well. Good filtration, a protein skimmer and regular water changes support this active grazer. Surgeonfish are prone to white spot, so stable water quality and quarantine are advised. This species is reef safe.

Breeding

Breeding is not achieved in the home aquarium. Surgeonfish are open-water spawners with drifting planktonic larvae, which cannot be replicated in home conditions. The focus should be on long-term health, correct herbivorous feeding, excellent water quality and low stress.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Ctenochaetus tominiensis

Common Name

Tomini Tang (Bristletooth Tomini Tang)

Origin

Western Pacific coral reefs and lagoons

Maximum Size

Around 15 cm

Lifespan

Often 5–7 years or more with good care

Temperament

Semi-aggressive, especially to other tangs

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

265 L

Recommended Tank Size

340 L or larger

Diet

Herbivore; film algae, detritus, marine algae and nori

Water Temperature

24–26°C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020–1.026

Suitable For

Medium to large established reef aquariums

Reef Safe

Reef safe

Plant Safe

Not applicable

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include clownfish, wrasses, angels, chromis, anthias, gobies and other robust reef fish of differing shape in an established aquarium.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with other tangs, especially other bristletooths, except in very large systems, and with highly aggressive fish that will harass it.
