turbo-snail
Turbo Snail | Turbo sp.

Description

The Turbo Snail is one of the hardest-working algae grazers in the marine hobby, mowing through film and hair algae on glass and rock at real speed. A single snail can clear an impressive area, which makes it superb value clean-up for an algae-troubled tank.

Natural Habitat

The Turbo snails supplied in Australia are tropical Indo-Pacific species collected from shallow rocky reefs and reef flats, including Queensland waters. They graze exposed rock almost constantly where wave action and sunlight drive heavy algae growth.

Appearance

A sturdy, rounded, top-shaped shell in mottled brown, green and grey, frequently encrusted with coralline and often ridged or textured, with a pearly interior. Most reach around 4–6 cm, occasionally a little more, making it one of the larger clean-up snails.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful and reef safe toward livestock, it focuses entirely on grazing. Because it is large and powerful, it can nudge or topple unsecured frags and loose decorations as it works, so glue frags down. It otherwise bothers nothing.

Feeding

A committed herbivore, it grazes film algae, hair algae, turf algae, diatoms and cyanobacteria. In a very clean tank it can run out of food, so supplement with dried algae sheets to keep it fed. A hungry Turbo can strip a tank of algae quickly.

Care Requirements

Suited to an established reef or marine system of at least 75 litres held at normal tropical reef temperatures of 23–27 °C. Drip-acclimate slowly, avoid all copper-based medications, and keep calcium and alkalinity stable for shell growth. Provide plenty of rock and open glass to graze, and a way for it to right itself, as Turbos struggle if they land upside down.

Breeding

Turbo snails are broadcast spawners with separate sexes and are not bred in the home aquarium.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Turbo sp.

Common Name

Turbo Snail

Origin

Tropical Indo-Pacific, including Australia

Maximum Size

4–6 cm

Lifespan

2–4 years

Temperament

Peaceful

Difficulty

Easy

Minimum Tank Size

75 litres

Recommended Tank Size

115+ litres

Diet

Herbivore — film, hair, turf algae, diatoms & cyanobacteria

Water Temperature

23–27 °C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

Salinity

1.023–1.025 SG

Suitable For

Reef and marine clean-up crews

Reef Safe

Yes — though large enough to bump unsecured frags

Plant Safe

Not applicable (marine)

Suitable Tank Mates

Peaceful reef fish, corals (securely mounted), grazing snails, conchs, cleaner shrimp and other reef-safe invertebrates.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid predatory hermit crabs and larger crabs, and shell-crushing or snail-eating fish such as some wrasses, pufferfish and triggerfish.

Australian marine livestock for in-store collection or local delivery.
