two-tone-wrasse
Two Tone Wrasse | Halichoeres prosopeion

Description

The Two Tone Wrasse is a hardy, active Halichoeres wrasse with a smart two-toned look: a dark grey-blue head shading into a bright yellow rear body. Always on the move, it hunts pests across the rock and dives into the sand to sleep. Reaching around 13 cm, it is a colourful, useful reef fish, though it should be considered reef safe with caution around small invertebrates.

Natural Habitat

This wrasse is found on coral-rich reefs and rubble slopes of the Western Pacific, foraging over rock and sand for small invertebrates. Recreating this means providing mature live rock, a sand bed of at least a few centimetres for it to bury into at night, and open swimming room. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as Halichoeres wrasses are notorious jumpers.

Appearance

The head and forebody are dark grey-blue, often with fine lines around the face, grading crisply into a lemon-yellow rear half and tail. Juveniles are more uniformly patterned and develop the two-tone look as they mature. A healthy specimen is alert, full-bodied and constantly foraging, with clear eyes and clean fins.

Temperament and Compatibility

Temperament is generally peaceful to semi-aggressive, mixing well with most community reef fish. It is a beneficial hunter of pests such as fireworms and pyramidellid snails and will not bother corals or clams. However, larger specimens may prey on very small ornamental shrimp, tiny crabs, feather dusters and tubeworms, so keep it with caution in an invertebrate-heavy reef.

Feeding

Feeding is easy. Offer a varied carnivore diet of mysis, enriched brine, finely chopped seafood and quality frozen and pellet foods. It also grazes the rock and sand for pods and small pests throughout the day, which helps keep it in good condition.

Care Requirements

Provide a minimum aquarium of 265 L with a sand bed at least a few centimetres deep and a secure, gap-free lid. Maintain temperature at 24–26°C, pH 8.1–8.4 and salinity around 1.020–1.026. A sand bed is essential, as this wrasse buries itself to sleep and when startled. Stable water quality and regular water changes keep it thriving. It is reef safe with caution regarding small mobile invertebrates.

Breeding

Breeding is not achieved in the home aquarium. Like other wrasses it is a pelagic spawner, releasing eggs and sperm into the water column with larvae drifting as plankton. Home conditions cannot replicate this, so the focus should be on health, good feeding and low stress.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Halichoeres prosopeion

Common Name

Two Tone Wrasse (Twotone Wrasse)

Origin

Western Pacific coral reefs and rubble slopes

Maximum Size

Around 13 cm

Lifespan

Up to around 10 years with good care

Temperament

Peaceful to semi-aggressive

Difficulty

Intermediate

Minimum Tank Size

265 L

Recommended Tank Size

300 L or larger

Diet

Carnivore; mysis, enriched brine, chopped seafood, pods and small pests

Water Temperature

24–26°C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

GH Range

Not applicable for marine fish

Salinity

1.020–1.026

Suitable For

Established reef aquariums with a sand bed and tight lid

Reef Safe

Reef safe with caution

Plant Safe

Not applicable

Suitable Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include clownfish, tangs, angels, chromis, anthias, gobies and other peaceful to semi-aggressive reef fish in an established aquarium.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid keeping with tiny ornamental shrimp and small delicate invertebrates that larger specimens may eat, and with very aggressive fish that will harass it.
