vanilla-strombus-snail
Vanilla Strombus Snail | Strombus spp.

Description

The Vanilla Strombus is a tireless sand-bed cleaner, a peaceful conch that spends its days sifting detritus and algae from the substrate and keeping the sand bright and aerated. Reef safe and endlessly industrious, it is a wonderful natural way to maintain a healthy sand bed while being genuinely engaging to watch as it forages on its long eye stalks.

Natural Habitat

These Strombus conchs live on sandy flats and lagoon floors of the Indo-Pacific, partly buried as they plough the substrate for food in warm, shallow water among coral.

Appearance

A pale, cream-to-vanilla conical shell gives this conch its name, often flecked with subtle markings. It moves in the characteristic lurching hop of the conchs, propelled by a strong foot, with two stalked eyes and a probing snout. Most reach around 5–8 cm.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful and reef safe, the Vanilla Strombus keeps to the sand and troubles no corals, fish or other invertebrates. Its principal threats are predatory hermit crabs and larger crabs that may attack it for its shell.

Feeding

An omnivorous sand-sifter, it consumes detritus, diatoms and film algae from the substrate. In a mature system it largely feeds itself, but there is often not enough natural food to sustain it — supplement with sinking algae pellets or wafers to prevent gradual starvation.

Care Requirements

Provide a deep, open sand bed of fine to medium grain, ideally 5 cm or more, where the conch can feed and bury. Drip-acclimate slowly, never use copper-based medications, and keep calcium and alkalinity stable for shell growth. Maintain good water quality and ample open substrate.

Breeding

Conchs have separate sexes and lay gelatinous egg masses in the sand. The planktonic larvae are not reared in a home aquarium.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Strombus spp.

Common Name

Vanilla Strombus Snail / Sand-Sifting Conch

Origin

Indo-Pacific

Maximum Size

8 cm

Lifespan

3–4 years

Temperament

Peaceful

Difficulty

Easy

Minimum Tank Size

115 litres

Recommended Tank Size

200+ litres

Diet

Omnivore — detritus, diatoms & film algae on sand; supplement with algae pellets

Water Temperature

23–27 °C

pH Range

8.1–8.4

Specific Gravity

1.023–1.026

Suitable For

Reef aquariums with an open sand bed

Reef Safe

Yes

Plant Safe

Not applicable (marine)

Suitable Tank Mates

Peaceful reef fish, corals, grazing snails, cleaner shrimp and other reef-safe invertebrates.

Avoid Keeping With

Avoid predatory hermit crabs, larger crabs and snail-eating fish.
