Peaceful and easy to keep in a shoal, it reaches around 8cm and brings real movement and colour to a planted community tank.

Natural Habitat

Phenacogrammus interruptus comes from the Congo River basin in Central Africa, inhabiting slow to moderately flowing tributaries and streams with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water and plenty of overhanging vegetation and submerged wood for cover.

Appearance

This strain shows a warm golden-yellow body with an iridescent sheen that shifts with the light. Males develop extended, feathery dorsal, anal and caudal fins as they mature, while females stay smaller and plainer with shorter fins. Good lighting and dark substrate bring out the strongest colour.

Temperament and Compatibility

Peaceful and best kept in a shoal of six or more, where males show off their fins to each other without real aggression. It suits a calm community of similarly-sized fish and should not be housed with boisterous fin-nippers, which target its long fins.

Feeding

An omnivore that takes quality flake and small pellets readily, supplemented with frozen and live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp and small bloodworm. A varied diet supports strong colour and healthy fin growth.

Care Requirements

Congo Tetras are sensitive to poor or fluctuating water quality — if it isn't well maintained, males lose colour and their fins fail to develop properly. Provide a tank of at least 100 litres (150 litres or more for a full shoal), soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water, subdued lighting and plenty of open swimming space with planting around the edges. Keep filtration efficient and perform regular water changes.

Breeding

An egg-scattering species that spawns over fine-leaved plants or a spawning mesh. Adults will eat their own eggs, so these should be removed or protected. Soft, slightly acidic water encourages spawning, and fry take fine dry foods and infusoria once free-swimming.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Phenacogrammus interruptus

Common Name

Yellow Congo Tetra

Origin

Congo River basin, Central Africa

Maximum Size

Around 8cm (males); females slightly smaller at ~6cm

Lifespan

3-5 years, longer with excellent care

Temperament

Peaceful (schooling)

Difficulty

Beginner to Intermediate (sensitive to poor water quality)

Minimum Tank Size

100 litres

Recommended Tank Size

150 litres or more for a shoal

Diet

Omnivore (micro): flake, small pellets, frozen and live foods

Water Temperature

23-26°C

pH Range

6.0-7.5

GH Range

Soft to moderately hard, around 4-18 dGH

Salinity

Not applicable (freshwater)

Suitable For

Peaceful planted community aquariums

Reef Safe

Not applicable

Plant Safe

Yes

Suitable Tank Mates

Other peaceful mid-water fish such as larger tetras, rasboras, danios, corydoras, peaceful gouramis and dwarf cichlids.

Avoid Keeping With

Fin-nippers such as tiger barbs and serpae tetras, and large or aggressive cichlids.
