yellow-tail-acei-pseudotropheus-acei
Yellow Tail Acei | Pseudotropheus sp. 'acei'

Description

Lavender-purple body, sunshine-yellow tail — the Acei is the gentle giant of the mbuna world, a peaceful schooler that grazes algae off wood rather than squabbling over rocky territories. Brilliant in a group, and an excellent choice for a keeper wanting Malawi colour without constant mbuna warfare, reaching around 12-15cm.

Natural Habitat

Endemic to Lake Malawi, found along the lake's western shoreline around Nkhata Bay, Senga Bay, Ngara, Ruarwe, Bandawe and Karonga. Unusually for a mbuna, it is strongly associated with submerged logs and branches, where it grazes algae from the wood surface — the only mbuna known to feed this way almost exclusively.

Appearance

A streamlined mbuna with a lavender-blue to purple body and a bright yellow tail, this "yellow tail" form being one of a few colour variants of the species. Males grow larger and more vividly coloured than females, and both sexes carry egg-spots on the anal fin.

Temperament and Compatibility

Noticeably more peaceful than most mbuna, though males are still territorial towards each other. It does well alongside moderately aggressive Malawi species, Aulonocara and other calmer cichlids, and can be kept as several males with plenty of females in a large enough tank. Do not mix with other Acei colour forms, as they will hybridise.

Feeding

Primarily a herbivore, grazing algae and other growth on wood in the wild. Feed a vegetable-based diet of spirulina flake, blanched spinach or similar, supplemented with occasional live or frozen foods. Never offer beef-heart or other red meat, which upsets the digestive system of Malawi cichlids.

Care Requirements

Provide plenty of piled rockwork forming caves, kept quite high as this species tends to occupy the upper half of the tank, with sand substrate and some driftwood or bogwood to replicate its natural wood-grazing habitat. Keep hard, strongly alkaline water and stable conditions typical of a Rift Lake setup.

Breeding

A maternal mouthbrooder and one of the easier mbuna to breed. Best spawned as a harem of one male to at least three females; the female carries eggs for three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, which take brine shrimp nauplii and micro-worm from birth.

Species Information

Scientific Name

Pseudotropheus sp.
