The Magnificent Tree Frog (Pelodryas splendida) is one of Australia's largest and most striking tree frogs, native to the tropical Kimberley region of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. It shares a close relationship with the Common Green Tree Frog and is similarly large and robust, but its dramatic head glands and deep emerald colour set it apart. Adults exceed 10 cm and can live 10 to 20 years with proper care.
In Queensland a licence is required to keep native frogs. See our Queensland Reptile Licence Guide.
Two Rules for All Frog Keeping
Always use dechlorinated water. Only use 2.0 UVB at most. Both apply to every native frog without exception.
Enclosure
Given their size, a generously proportioned tall vivarium is important. A minimum of around 60 x 45 x 60 cm suits a pair or trio of adults, and larger is better. Include sturdy branches and foliage, a moisture-retaining substrate, and a shallow dechlorinated water dish with easy access and exit. Browse our terrarium range.
Temperature and Humidity
- Daytime temperature: 24 to 30°C (warmer than Common Green Tree Frogs, reflecting their tropical origin)
- Night: allow to drop, not below about 20°C
- Humidity: 60 to 75%
Mist daily. Allow partial drying between mistings. Browse our heating and thermostat range.
UVB Lighting
A 2.0 UVB tube on a 10 to 12 hour cycle. Browse our UVB lighting range.
Feeding
Insectivores with a hearty appetite. Offer varied live insects: larger crickets, woodies, and moths. Gut-load before use and dust with calcium and multivitamin at every second feeding.
- Juveniles: daily.
- Adults: 2 to 3 times per week at roughly 10 to 20% of body weight per session.
Browse our live feeders.
Handling
Handle only when necessary using clean, wet, powder-free hands or gloves. Keep sessions brief.
Biosecurity
Never release captive frogs or their enclosure water into the environment. Quarantine new arrivals away from existing collections.
Breeding
Seasonal breeders triggered by cooler conditions followed by simulated rainfall. Eggs are laid in water, tadpoles are raised in clean well-oxygenated water, and froglets emerge after several weeks. Their size means breeding pairs need ample enclosure space.
