The right reptile substrate depends on where your animal comes from, not on what looks tidiest. Dry country species get Zoo Med desert sands and Excavator clay, which can be shaped into burrows, or a washable Eco Carpet for keepers who want nothing loose. Many snakes do well on Zoo Med Aspen, which holds a burrow and shows up mess. Forest and tropical species need moisture holding beds, which is where Eco Tech coco peat, coco husk and sphagnum moss, Zoo Med Repti Bark and Tropical BioBlend, and Exo Terra Bio Drain come in, the last forming the drainage layer under a bioactive setup. Turtle gravel and coloured hermit crab sands round it out.

Spot clean daily, change bedding on a schedule, and keep loose sand out of hatchling enclosures, where it is most likely to be swallowed with food.
