Zoo Med Hermit Crab Sand White
A clean, natural-looking floor that still feeds calcium into the habitat. Zoo Med Hermit Crab Sand in White is a fine, natural calcium carbonate substrate that gives a crabitat a bright, beach-like floor while supplying calcium as crabs forage and dig across it.
Key features
- Calcium carbonate base – a natural source of calcium, important for exoskeleton strength and the moult cycle.
- Natural white colour – no paint or dye; the white comes from the mineral itself.
- Holds a burrow shape – fine sand that stays stable when lightly dampened, so crabs can dig and bury themselves for moulting.
- Easy to spot-clean – waste and old food lift out easily with a scoop and sieve, leaving clean sand behind.
- 0.9 kg bag – sized to top up or refresh part of an existing crabitat floor.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable as a floor substrate for land hermit crab enclosures, and as the visible top layer over a moisture-holding base in a layered setup. Not recommended as the only substrate in a deep bioactive enclosure, where a moisture-retentive layer underneath does most of the burrowing and humidity work.
Care and maintenance
Keep the sand at "sandcastle" dampness – damp enough to hold its shape when pressed, not wet – and deep enough for your largest crab to bury itself completely for a safe moult. Spot-clean daily with a scoop and sieve so a full substrate change is needed less often.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by the standard Zoo Med manufacturer warranty against defects, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Standard parcel delivery.
Common questions
Will white sand show mess more than a colour?
Yes, slightly – and that's actually useful, since it makes droppings and leftover food easier to spot for daily scooping.
How often does it need replacing?
With daily spot-cleaning, most keepers do a full substrate change only every few months; the visible white makes it easy to judge when one is due.
Can I combine White and Yellow for a two-tone look?
Yes – both are the same calcium carbonate base, so they layer or blend safely for a custom look.
Is this the same substrate as the coloured versions?
Yes – the same calcium carbonate sand, just without added pigment.
