A carpet anemone (Stichodactyla haddoni) is a sand dweller, and that decides most of its care. In the wild the column sits buried deep in sand with only the disc showing, so it needs a sand bed several centimetres deep. Give it strong lighting, enough flow to keep the disc clean without folding it over, and a meaty feed of prawn or fish once or twice a week. The tentacles are very sticky and can catch and eat small fish such as gobies and blennies, so choose tank mates accordingly. Natural hosts include Clark's, saddleback and our own Barrier Reef anemonefish, and an adult can pass 50 centimetres across.
