Substrate & Gravel

Aragonite based sands and crushed coral for saltwater tanks, from CaribSea, Bioscape and Seachem. Unlike inert freshwater gravel, aragonite slowly dissolves carbonate into the water, which helps hold pH and alkalinity up rather than letting them drift down.

Grain size changes how the bed behaves. Fine sand suits sand sifting gobies, wrasses and burrowing invertebrates and looks natural, but blows around under strong flow. Coarser grades stay put better and suit high flow systems, though detritus settles into the gaps and needs vacuuming.

Some reef keepers run bare bottom tanks with no substrate at all for easier waste export. Both approaches work, so choose based on the livestock you want to keep.
