Filtration in a freshwater tank does three jobs at once. It traps solids, houses the bacteria that convert ammonia to nitrite and then nitrate, and holds carbon or resin to strip dissolved compounds. Rate a filter to the tank volume and then to the stocking level, since a heavily stocked cichlid tank needs far more turnover than a lightly planted community tank of the same size.
