A protein skimmer removes dissolved organic waste from saltwater before bacteria break it down into nitrate and phosphate. Fine bubbles inside the skimmer body attract that waste to their surface, carry it up into a collection cup and take it out of the system entirely, which is something no filter media can do.
Skimmers only work in saltwater, so they have no freshwater equivalent. We stock Red Sea, Aqua Medic and Fluval models in sump mounted and hang on the back formats.
Size a skimmer to your total water volume and your stocking level, and give it a fortnight to settle in after installation before judging how it is performing. Our team can match a model to your system.
