The plants that fill the back and middle of a planted tank and give it depth. Our range covers Amazon and bleheri swords in small, medium and large sizes, a deep list of cryptocoryne including wendtii, lutea, balansae, undulata and tropica, vallisneria, and stem plants such as bacopa, ambulia, ammania, cardamine and Alternanthera reineckii.

Rooted plants such as swords and cryptocoryne feed mainly through the roots, so they do best in an aquasoil or with root tabs pushed into gravel underneath them. Stem plants take more of their nutrition from the water column and respond to liquid fertiliser.

Cryptocoryne will often melt back after planting, dropping all its leaves before regrowing from the crown. That is normal and not a sign of a dead plant, so leave it alone. See Plant Care for fertilisers and root tabs.
