Bucephalandra is a rhizome plant from Borneo, grown for leaves that carry an iridescent blue and purple sheen under good lighting and a scatter of tiny reflective spots. We currently stock the Devil's Eye variety.

Like anubias and java fern it attaches to wood and rock rather than rooting in substrate, and the rhizome must stay exposed rather than buried or the plant will rot. Glue or tie it in place and then leave it alone.

It is slow. Bucephalandra grows at a fraction of the pace of a stem plant, which is part of why it stays neat and holds its shape, but it also means algae has time to settle on older leaves if light and nutrients are out of balance. Low to moderate light suits it best.
