Hairgrass gives a planted tank a lawn without the density of a true carpet, and it is more forgiving than most carpeting plants. We stock Eleocharis acicularis and the finer Eleocharis parvula in pots, plus Eleocharis vivipara and Cyperus helferi for a taller, more sculptural look.

Hairgrass spreads by runners rather than growing outwards from the crown, so the trick is to separate a pot into small clumps and plant them a couple of centimetres apart rather than putting the whole pot in as one lump. It will fill the gaps itself over a few weeks.

Good light and a nutrient rich substrate speed it up considerably, and added carbon dioxide will roughly halve the time to a full lawn. See Plant Care.
