The backbone of a community tank. Tetras cover neon, cardinal, black neon, emperor, phantom and congo species, most of them small schooling fish that look their best in groups of eight or more. Barbs include tiger, cherry, odessa, rosy and the red line torpedo barb, all more active and more boisterous than tetras.

Rainbowfish are the Australian and New Guinea contribution to this group, and they are underrated. Boesemani, praecox, red rainbow and a long list of Australian natives colour up properly once mature and settled. Rasboras, danios, pencilfish and gouramis complete the range.

Buy schooling fish in numbers. A group of ten neons behaves completely differently to three, and shoaling species kept short are stressed rather than shy. See shipping and delivery for live fish terms.
