Growing coral consumes the water it lives in. Stony corals pull calcium and carbonate out to build skeleton, which drops calcium and alkalinity, and a mixed reef gets through magnesium and trace elements as well. Supplements put back what the corals take.

Alkalinity, sometimes listed as KH or carbonate hardness, is the measure that moves fastest and stresses coral hardest when it swings, so it is worth testing before and after any change to a dosing routine. Add supplements slowly and to a schedule rather than in one hit.
