Continuum Bacter Gen M
A live bacterial culture that seeds and keeps up marine biological filtration.
Continuum Aquatics BacterGen•M is a concentrated culture of non-pathogenic marine bacteria for reef and fish-only marine tanks. It's used to establish nitrifying bacteria in a new system, and to keep ammonia, nitrite, phosphate and nitrate under control in an established one, without pushing hydrogen sulphide production up the way some anaerobic-only products can.
Key features
- Aerobic and anaerobic bacteria – covers both the oxygen-rich surfaces of your filtration and the low-oxygen pockets in rock and sand.
- Cycles new tanks – dosed daily for the first two-plus weeks, it seeds the biological filter before livestock goes in.
- Ongoing waste control – dosed as needed in an established tank to help process fish waste and uneaten food.
- Non-pathogenic – the manufacturer states the culture contains no disease-causing organisms.
Specifications
| Size | Doses per bottle (at 5 mL a dose) |
|---|---|
| 250 mL | Approximately 50 doses |
| 500 mL | Approximately 100 doses |
| 2 L | Approximately 400 doses |
Dose count is calculated from the bottle volume against the standard 5 mL dose in the directions below; the dosage rate itself is the same across all three sizes. Continuum Aquatics does not publish separate per-size specifications for BacterGen•M beyond pack volume.
Ingredients
Continuum Aquatics declares BacterGen•M as containing a blend of aerobic and anaerobic, non-pathogenic marine bacteria. The manufacturer does not publish the individual bacterial strains or their concentrations on the product label or its own specification page – we've asked Continuum for the full declaration and will update this page if we receive one.
Dosage and directions
Mix the dose into about 250 mL of tank water in a cup, let it stand for a few minutes, then add it to the aquarium.
| Use | Dose | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| New aquarium (cycling) | 5 mL (1 capful) per 95 L (25 US gal) | Daily for 2+ weeks |
| Established tank, medium–heavy bioload | 5 mL per 95 L (25 US gal) | As needed |
| Established tank, low nutrient | 5 mL per 189 L (50 US gal) | 1–2 times weekly |
Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Marine fish-only and reef tanks, at set-up or as ongoing maintenance.
- Not a substitute for water changes or export equipment such as a protein skimmer – it supports the biological side of waste processing, not the whole nutrient budget.
Safety
Keep out of reach of children. Not for human consumption. If the product contacts eyes, flush with water. Contains non-pathogenic microbes.
Goes well with
- A protein skimmer or other export method, to remove the waste the bacteria break down.
- A phosphate test kit, to check the tank is trending the way you expect after dosing.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by Continuum Aquatics' standard warranty against manufacturing defects, in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. Available in 250 mL, 500 mL and 2 L bottles; standard freight applies.
Common questions
Do I need this if my tank is already cycled?
You can still dose it during ongoing maintenance, particularly in medium to heavily stocked tanks, to support the bacteria already doing the work.
Will it cloud the water?
Continuum doesn't note a clouding effect for this product; any temporary cloudiness after dosing a new system should clear as the bacteria establish.
Can I use it alongside carbon or a UV steriliser?
Continuum's own documentation doesn't state an interaction for BacterGen•M specifically. If you're running UV, it's worth dosing bacterial additives with the unit switched off briefly so the culture has a chance to establish before passing through it.
