Water evaporates from an aquarium but salt does not, so as the level drops the salinity climbs. An auto top off unit, shortened to ATO, watches the water level and pumps in fresh water from a reservoir to replace what has evaporated, holding salinity steady around the clock.
It is one of the highest value pieces of automation on a marine tank, particularly a smaller one, where a day of hot weather can move salinity enough to stress corals and invertebrates.
We stock AutoAqua and Red Sea units with optical and float sensors, most with a failsafe second sensor and a pump timeout so a stuck sensor cannot flood the tank. Top up with RO/DI water rather than tap water, or you will concentrate whatever is in your tap supply.
