API grew out of Aquarium Pharmaceuticals, a company that has made aquarium treatments and test kits for more than sixty years and has belonged to Mars since 2003. Its Freshwater Master Test Kit, a popular first kit for new fish keepers, covers pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate in one box, with separate kits for calcium, phosphate, copper, KH and GH hardness and high range pH. Water care includes Stress Coat and Tap Water Conditioner, Quick Start bacteria, pH Up, pH Down and Proper pH buffers, Ammo Lock, Accu Clear and Algaefix, with Melafix, Pimafix and Bettafix for fish health. Foods cover tropical, goldfish and betta diets, algae eater wafers and shrimp pellets, and Pond Care treats the outdoor pond.

Liquid kits beat strips on accuracy, and both need shaking and timing exactly as the leaflet says.
