The consumables that go inside the filter. Biological media such as ceramic noodles and sintered glass houses the nitrifying bacteria that convert ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate. Mechanical media, meaning sponges, foam and filter wool, catches solids. Chemical media such as activated carbon, ammonia removers and phosphate resins targets dissolved compounds.

Stocked brands include Seachem, Fluval, Bioscape, API and CaribSea, in loose and cartridge form.

Replace mechanical and chemical media on a schedule, but leave biological media alone as much as possible. Replacing all your media at once removes the bacterial colony and can restart a tank cycle, which is a common cause of a mystery ammonia spike in an established tank.
