Aeration and carbon dioxide for freshwater tanks. Air pumps from Bioscape, Fluval, Aqua Medic and Marina drive airstones, sponge filters and ornaments, and increase surface movement, which is what actually gets oxygen into the water.

Planted tank CO2 systems sit here as well. Carbon dioxide is the limiting nutrient in most planted tanks, and adding it is the single biggest step up in plant growth once lighting and fertiliser are already in place. Kits cover regulators, diffusers, drop checkers and tubing.

Fit a non return valve on every air line so water cannot siphon back into the pump during a power cut, and run CO2 on a timer that shuts off overnight when plants stop using it.
