Substrates for freshwater tanks, from inert gravels and sands through to nutrient rich aquasoils built for planted setups, from CaribSea, Bioscape, Seachem and Fluval.
Choose by what lives in the tank. Corydoras, kuhli loaches and other burrowing species need fine sand or smooth rounded gravel, because sharp edges damage their barbels. Heavy root feeding plants such as sword plants and cryptocoryne do far better in an aquasoil, or with root tabs added under gravel.
Substrate also affects water chemistry. Some soils lower pH and soften water, which suits shrimp and soft water species, while crushed coral or shell grit raises hardness for African cichlids and livebearers.
