Red Sea Reefer Skimmer 300 PSK600
A dense, coffee-dark skimmate cup is the surest sign your reef's dissolved waste never got the chance to become nitrate. The Red Sea Reefer Skimmer 300 is the internal protein skimmer built to drop straight into a Reefer-series sump skimmer chamber, using a Sicce PSK 600 needle-wheel pump to strip dissolved organics out of the water column before they break down into the nutrients that feed algae.
Key features
- Sicce PSK 600 needle-wheel pump — a dense, fine bubble column for efficient organic export, at a modest 12 W running cost.
- Sized for the Reefer sump skimmer chamber — drops straight into the compartment it was designed for, no bracket or plumbing modification.
- Quick-release collection cup — lifts out for emptying without disturbing the pump or air intake.
- Internal, in-sump operation — no external plumbing, unions or drain lines to run.
- Rated across three bioload levels — see the table below for what it will actually keep up with in your system.

Will it fit my sump?
This is the internal skimmer sized for the Reefer skimmer chamber it ships to match — check your sump's skimmer compartment against the footprint above before ordering a replacement unit, since Reefer sump chambers vary in size across the range. If you're unsure which chamber size your Reefer sump uses, tell us the tank model and we'll confirm before you buy.
Performance — rated bioload
| Stocking level | Rated system volume |
|---|---|
| Light bioload (FOWLR, lightly stocked) | up to 850 L |
| Medium bioload (mixed reef) | up to 570 L |
| Heavy bioload (SPS-dominant, heavily stocked) | up to 285 L |
The rated volume drops sharply as bioload rises — a skimmer that comfortably handles a lightly stocked 850 L system will struggle on a heavily stocked reef a third that size. Size to your heaviest realistic bioload, not your tank's nominal volume.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suited to Reefer-series sumps running the chamber this skimmer is sized for, on systems within its bioload range. Not a fit for sumps outside the Reefer range without confirming chamber dimensions first, and not powerful enough on its own for a heavily stocked reef beyond 285 L — step up to the Reefer Skimmer 600 or 900, or the equivalent DC model, once bioload outgrows this unit.
Care and maintenance
Empty the collection cup regularly — a full cup stops skimming entirely rather than just reducing output. Tune the water level and air intake until skimmate runs the colour of tea to coffee; watery, pale skimmate usually means the water level is set too high. Rinse the needle-wheel impeller periodically to keep the bubble column consistent.
Safety
Mains-powered — run it on an RCD-protected circuit and keep a drip loop on the power cord where it enters the sump area.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by Red Sea's manufacturer warranty, applied in addition to your consumer guarantee rights under Australian Consumer Law.
Goes well with
- Reefer Skimmer 300 DC Pump Upgrade Kit — swaps this AC pump for a variable-speed DC pump if you want adjustable, app-monitored skimming later.
- Red Sea ReefMat Filter 250 — pairs mechanical roller filtration with protein skimming in the same sump chamber class, cutting filter-sock changes to occasional roll swaps.
Common questions
What size system is this skimmer rated for?
It depends on stocking: up to 850 L on a lightly stocked system, down to 285 L on a heavily stocked SPS reef. Size to your heaviest realistic bioload.
Does it need a controller?
No — this is the standard AC pump version and runs directly from mains power. The DC upgrade kit is a separate product for anyone who wants variable-speed, app-controlled operation.
What does normal skimmate look like?
Tea to coffee coloured skimmate is the target. Watery, pale skimmate usually means the water level in the skimmer is set too high; overflowing, wet skimmate means it's set too low or the cup needs emptying.
Will it fit my Reefer sump?
It's sized for the Reefer skimmer chamber it's specified for — check the footprint in the specifications table against your sump's skimmer compartment, or ask us to confirm against your tank model.
