The rated volume drops sharply as bioload rises — a skimmer that comfortably handles a lightly stocked 850 L system will struggle on a heavily stocked reef a third that size. Size to your heaviest realistic bioload, not your tank's nominal volume.

Tune the water level and air intake until skimmate runs the colour of tea to coffee; watery, pale skimmate usually means the water level is set too high. What does normal skimmate look like?

Tea to coffee coloured skimmate is the target. Watery, pale skimmate usually means the water level in the skimmer is set too high; overflowing, wet skimmate means it's set too low or the cup needs emptying.
