Red Sea Reef Base 10kg
Natural aragonite sand that buffers reef water as it settles. Red Sea Reef Base is an oolitic aragonite substrate, formed by natural precipitation and collected from a renewable source — the same calcium-carbonate sand chemistry reef keepers have relied on for decades to help hold pH and alkalinity steady in a marine system. It's sold in a 10 kg bag, in Pink or White.
Key features
- Natural aragonite — helps maintain a stable pH around 8.2–8.3 and supports alkalinity (KH) stability as it dissolves slowly over time.
- Processed, not just dredged — exposed to air and UV light, screened, then mechanically washed twice for a cleaner bag.
- Two tones — Pink gives the classic warm reef-flat look; White gives a brighter, more neutral sand bed.
- 10 kg bag — sized to build up a display bed gradually or to top up an existing one.

Will it fit my tank?
Red Sea doesn't publish an exact coverage figure — how far a 10 kg bag goes depends entirely on the footprint of your tank and how deep a bed you want. As a starting point, weigh out one bag over your sump or a spare container to see the volume it makes before committing it to the display, and buy a second bag rather than guess short on a display you'll only fill once.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suited to marine fish-only and reef systems as a display or sump substrate. Not intended as a freshwater substrate, and not a substitute for live rock or bacterial supplementation when cycling a new tank.
Warranty and delivery
Ships standard parcel post. As a natural product, minor variation in grain and tone between bags is normal and not a fault.
Common questions
What's the difference between Pink and White?
Both are the same aragonite chemistry — the difference is purely the colour and tone of the finished sand bed, Pink giving a warmer look and White a brighter one.
Do I need to rinse it before adding it to the tank?
Yes — even after Red Sea's own washing process, a rinse before use will settle any remaining fines faster and keep the water from clouding on day one.
How deep should I make my sand bed?
That depends on what you're running it for — talk to us about your setup if you're planning a deep sand bed rather than a shallow display layer, since the right depth changes the buying quantity.
