Zoo Med Desert Sand Natural Red
Undyed natural sand that lets desert reptiles dig, burrow and thermoregulate the way they would in the wild. Zoo Med ReptiSand in Natural Red is a fine, chemical-free sand sold in 5 kg and 10 kg bags, sized for arid-zone terrariums housing bearded dragons, sand boas and soft-shell turtles.
Key features
- No added dyes or chemicals — the red colour is the sand's natural tone, not a coating that can flake or leach.
- Fine, consistent grain — supports natural digging and burrowing behaviour rather than resisting it.
- Excellent heat conductor — carries warmth from an under-tank heater or basking zone through to where your animal is buried.
- Holds shaped terrain — banks, hollows and burrows keep their form instead of collapsing flat.
- Two pack sizes — 5 kg for a top-up or smaller enclosure, 10 kg for a full substrate bed in a larger one.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for adult bearded dragons, sand boas, uromastyx and soft-shell turtles kept in arid or semi-arid setups where digging and burrowing are natural behaviours. Not recommended as the sole substrate for hatchlings and juveniles of these species, or for species that don't dig — a solid substrate carries less risk of accidental ingestion at feeding time.
Care and use
Spread in an even layer over the enclosure floor, building it deeper at any digging or burrowing spot. Spot-clean droppings as they appear, and plan to replace the sand as part of routine enclosure maintenance rather than trying to fully sanitise it in place.
Safety
Loose sand substrates carry an impaction risk if ingested in quantity, which is why Zoo Med and most keepers reserve them for adult, established diggers and feed away from the substrate surface where practical, especially for juveniles.
Goes well with
Pairs with a digital thermometer to check surface and burrow temperatures, and with a basking lamp and fixture sized to your enclosure for the heat gradient this sand is conducting.
Warranty and delivery
As a consumable substrate, ReptiSand doesn't carry a manufacturer warranty term. It's covered by the consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law, which apply in addition to anything a manufacturer offers. Standard freight applies.
Common questions
Is Zoo Med ReptiSand safe for bearded dragons?
Yes, for adult bearded dragons in an arid setup — it's an established, widely used substrate for the species. Zoo Med and most keepers recommend a solid substrate for hatchlings and juveniles instead, to reduce the risk of impaction from incidental ingestion.
Does the colour wash out or fade?
No — Natural Red is the sand's own colour, not a dye or coating, so it doesn't rinse out or fade with cleaning the way tinted substrates can.
How often should I replace it?
Spot-clean waste as you see it and replace the sand fully as part of your regular enclosure maintenance routine — Zoo Med doesn't publish a fixed replacement interval for this substrate.
What size bag do I need?
That depends on your enclosure footprint and how deep a layer you want. The 5 kg bag suits a top-up or a smaller terrarium; the 10 kg bag is the better buy for a full substrate bed in a larger enclosure.
