Eco Tech Sphagnum Moss Brick
Compressed moss that rehydrates into natural, moisture-holding substrate. The Eco Tech Sphagnum Moss Brick is a dehydrated block of natural sphagnum moss that expands to many times its dry size once soaked in water. It's used as a humidity-retaining substrate, nesting material and egg-laying medium in reptile and amphibian enclosures, and works well as a bioactive-compatible top layer alongside leaf litter and live plants. Buying it compressed keeps shelf space down until you're ready to hydrate and use it.
Key features
- Compressed for storage – a small, lightweight brick that takes up minimal space until soaked
- Expands substantially when soaked – the 200 g brick yields around 16 L of loose moss; the 500 g brick yields around 40 L
- Holds moisture well – supports humidity for reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates that need it
- Natural sphagnum moss – no dyes or synthetic additives
- Bioactive-compatible – pairs with live plants, leaf litter and clean-up crews

Which size do I need?
The 200 g brick is enough for a single humid hide, nesting box or a modest bioactive top layer in a small to medium enclosure. The 500 g brick expands to roughly two and a half times the volume, and suits larger bioactive terrariums, multiple hides, or an enclosure with a deep substrate layer.
Preparation
Soak the compressed brick in clean, dechlorinated water until it has fully expanded and separated into loose moss, then drain off any excess water before use. Use it damp for humidity retention, or wring it out for a drier, looser texture.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for: humid hides, nesting and egg-laying substrate, bioactive terrarium top layers, and species that benefit from elevated humidity – many geckos, tree frogs, some snake species during shedding, and terrestrial invertebrates.
Not suitable for: arid-species enclosures where a dry substrate is required, or as the sole substrate where a deep burrowing layer is needed – pair it with a bulk substrate for that purpose.
Care and maintenance
Spot-clean soiled areas and top up with fresh moss as needed. Replace it fully if it develops mould or an unpleasant smell.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by your rights under Australian Consumer Law in addition to any manufacturer warranty. Standard shipping applies – no special freight handling is required for this product.
Common questions
How much moss does one brick make?
The 200 g brick expands to roughly 16 L of loose moss, and the 500 g brick to roughly 40 L, once fully soaked.
Can I reuse sphagnum moss?
Yes, as long as it stays clean and mould-free. Rinse it between uses and replace it once it starts to break down or smell.
Does it affect enclosure humidity?
Yes – damp sphagnum moss releases moisture gradually, which helps maintain elevated humidity in the area it's placed.
Is it safe for bioactive setups?
Yes, sphagnum moss is commonly used in bioactive terrariums alongside live plants, leaf litter and a clean-up crew.
