Size Your Phytoplankton Dose
Enter your tank volume and we'll work out how much live phytoplankton to dose – based on the published rates for Reefalicious and Seachem.
Based on published rates: Reefalicious 10 mL per 100 L daily, Seachem 5 mL per 190 L twice weekly. Start conservatively in a smaller or lightly-stocked tank – overdosing either product can cloud the water.
FAQ
How much phytoplankton should I dose?
Enter your tank volume above – Reefalicious is dosed at 10 mL per 100 L daily, Seachem Reef Phytoplankton at 5 mL per 190 L twice weekly. They're different products with different schedules, so pick one and follow its own rate rather than mixing the two doses together.
Do I need this if I already dose a coral food?
Often yes – phytoplankton and bottled coral amino or particulate foods target different feeders. Clams and many soft corals rely specifically on phytoplankton-sized particles (1–20 microns) that other foods don't replace.
Will dosing phytoplankton cloud my water?
At the labelled rate it generally shouldn't, but overdosing – especially in a smaller or lightly-stocked tank – can cause temporary cloudiness and add an unwanted nutrient load. Start at the standard dose and increase gradually if your filter feeders are clearly drawing it down.
Can I use this to feed a copepod or rotifer culture instead?
Yes – Reefalicious Live Phytoplankton in particular is commonly used both ways: dosed straight into the display, or into a separate copepod/rotifer culture vessel to keep that culture fed and reproducing.
